A 56-years-old ‘havaldar’ attached to District Armed Reserve (DAR) Police shot himself with his service 303 rifle while on duty on Friday.
The deceased, identified as Ramesh, is survived by his wife and two sons. Ramesh was on guard at the armoury at the NCC Karnataka Battalion premises when the incident occurred.
According to police and personnel at the NCC office, they heard a gun shot from the armoury at noon. The police, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Anupam Agarwal, and officials from the A.P.M.C. Police were informed, who rushed to the spot.
On unlocking the door, Ramesh’s body was found in a pool of blood on a cot just beside the door. Preliminary investigation on the spot suggested that the deceased had pointed the rifle to his chest and fired.
The police are yet to establish a motive behind the incident but are suspecting that Ramesh ended his life due to frustration or personal problems. His relatives, who rushed to the spot, admitted that Ramesh’s liquor intake had increased over the past six months but he had never complained or discussed his family or personal problems.
After ‘panchnama’, the body was sent for post-mortem. Relatives said that Ramesh’s body would be buried at Chikkodi, his native place.
Police have registered a case of suicide and taken up investigation.
