The Dalit woman, who had filed a police complaint alleging that a former gram panchayat member raped her, attempted to commit suicide on Thursday evening. Sringeri police told The Hindu that the woman consumed poison and she had been taken to a hospital in Mangaluru for treatment.

The woman had filed a complaint with Sringeri police on Tuesday against Narendra Heggade. The accused, in an inebriated mood on new year eve, raped her, she said in the complaint. The police had registered a case under Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code, besides the SC-ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The accused is a former gram panchayat member. He has identified actively with a political party. He is absconding.
