Dalit Vachanakara Jayanti, a day dedicated to the 12th century ‘sharanas’ who belonged to the deprived classes, was celebrated across the district on Wednesday.

Pavan Kumar Malpati, Bidar Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer, flagged off a process at the Deputy commissioner’s office in the morning. A team of ‘dollu kunita’ artistes performed along the way. Resource persons spoke at the Rang Mandir later.

Gangambika Police Patil, writer, said that the State government and other agencies engaged in heritage conservation should focus on the monuments related to the ‘vachanakaras’ from the deprived communities.

She said that their contribution was significant as they brought out the pain and suffering of untouchables into mainstream Kannada literature, she said.

The event was celebrated in schools, colleges, government offices, and other institutions.
