‘Social amity, harmony essential for the country to progress’

Minister for Home K.J. George on Saturday called upon the educational institutions to create awareness among students on diverse culture and tradition of the land.

Inaugurating a programme to mark the golden jubilee celebrations of the Sacred Heart High School and silver jubilee of the Sacred Heart Primary School here, he said harmonious co-existence of people from diverse faiths and social background was the striking trait of Indian culture.

Secularism

It was essential to maintain social amity and harmony to take the nation forward on the path of progress. Secularism has been enshrined in the Indian Constitution.

‘Teachers’ duty’

It was the responsibility of teachers to inculcate liberal values among students. Revolution in information technology had provided easy access to knowledge. The incidents of misuse of information technology were also being reported quite frequently.

It was necessary to guide the students on proper use of technology, he said.

S.J. Francis Serrao, Bishop of Shivamogga Diocese, in his address urged the students to develop service-motive. Former Minister Kumar Bangarappa, president of the zilla panchayat Kalagodu Ratnakar, Mayor Mangala Annappa and H.M. Chandrashekharappa and G.D. Narayanappa, ex-MLAs, were present.
