Activists of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Centre of Indian Trade Union staged a protest in front of the Lead Bank here on Tuesday demanding that the authorities concerned open additional counters in banks to facilitate people open Aadhar number linked savings bank accounts.
District secretary of CPI(M) Syed Mujeeb alleged that people have to wait in long queues to open savings bank account in banks having core banking facility to get LPG subsidy through Direct Cash Benefit Transfer Scheme launched in the district on June 1.
District secretary of CITU N.K. Subramanya demanded that the authorities concerned help students studying in schools and colleges who get scholarship amount through DBT to have zero balance savings bank accounts.
LPG consumers will continue to get subsidy up to August 31, 2013 even if they have not linked their Aadhar number with bank account number and LPG consumer number. From September 1, only those LPG consumers who have linked their Aadhar number with LPG consumer number and bank account number will get LPG subsidy.
Regional manager of State Bank of Mysore Nagesh told the agitators that banks cannot say no to people who want to open savings bank accounts.
