September 18, 2014 03:52 pm | Updated 03:52 pm IST - Bangalore:

The Centralised Processing Center (CPC) of the Income Tax Department at Bangalore has become the first in the department to become ISO-27001 compliant. The ISO-27001 certificate was awarded to CPC by British Standards Institution (BSI) here on Thursday.

The ISO- 27001 is an information security management standard aimed at standardising information security management policies and procedures used for managing information security aspects.

Receiving the ISO-27001 Certificate on behalf of CPC, Promila Bhardwaj, Director General of Income Tax (Systems), New Delhi, stated that the Income tax Department is committed to safeguarding the confidentiality of taxpayer data and prevention of improper access or use of the same.

The tax administration seeks to achieve the objective by making information security management as an overarching framework to the projects being implemented under its auspices. Compliance to such international standards of information security will not only improve service delivery to taxpayers, but will enable data sharing with other organs of the government for revenue maximization.
