The Honnavar JMFC Court on Friday granted conditional bail to the couple who were arrested on charges of extortion and blackmail following a complaint filed by an aide of Ramachandrapur Math.

After hearing the arguments of the prosecution and the counsel for the plaintiffs, Senior Civil Judge M.S. Harini granted them conditional bail and asked the couple to submit a personal bond of Rs. 10,000 each. The court also directed them to not make attempts to destroy evidence and appear before the Investigating Officer on the second Saturday of every month.

The court had, during an earlier hearing, rejected the plea of the counsel of the complainant Shambhu Sharma to assist Assistant Public Prosecutor Badrinath Nair in the case following objection raised by the counsel for the couple M.L. Naik.

While initially the Honnavar Police had investigated the case, it was subsequently handed over for further investigation to the Additional Superintendent of Police of Udupi following an order by IGP Western Range, Amit Paul.

Meanwhile, a case of sexual harassment has been filed against the seer of Ramachandrapur Math Sri Raghaveshwara Bharati by the couple’s daughter on behalf of her mother at Girinagar Police Station in Bangalore. The police have served notice to the seer to appear before them for recording his statement.
