Couple commit suicide in Korategere

They were running chit fund business

A couple who were running a chit fund business and had allegedly cheated many people of Tumakuru, Bengaluru Rural and Chikkaballapur districts allegedly committed suicide on Tuesday.

The police said that the deceased have been identified as Prabhavathi (38) and her husband, Ravikumar (45) of Hanumanathapura in Koratagere town of Tumakuru district.

Prabhavathi allegedly consumed poison and Ravikumar hanged himself in the shed of the house around midnight in their house.

The couple were running the chit fund business for the past 10 years and had cheated people of nearly Rs.100 crore. Cheating cases against the couple were registered in Koratagere police station, Jayanagara police station in Tumakuru district and also in Bengaluru Rural and Chikkaballapur districts.

Prabhavathi was imprisoned for a month in Central Prison for Women in Tumakuru, and was later released. Inquiry in the cheating cases was going on. But as the people who were cheated by the couple were demanding return of the money, they had taken the extreme step.

A case has been registered in Koratagere police station.
