Council adjourned over issue of tainted ministers

December 19, 2014 01:00 pm | Updated 01:00 pm IST - BELAGAVI:

The issue of discussion on the allegations against three of the ministers of Congress Government in the state led to chaos in the Karnataka Legislative Council here on Friday leading to adjournment.

As soon as the session began on Friday, BJP member G. Madhusudhan raised the issue of discussion over allegations against Minister Qamarul Islam under Rule 307. Although the Chaiman, D.H. Shankaramurthy, clarified that as per the rules of the Council, the chair could not allow discussion on such charges when a point of order was raised over the matter being sub judice.

“However I have told the council that I need time to look into the issue to ascertain whether the matter is really sub judice. Once I verify the contention that the matter is sub judice, I will be able to take a decision on whether to allow discussion or not’, he said.

However, unsatisfied by the Chairman’s words, the BJP members took turns to impress upon the Chairman to consider their request even as the floor leader, S.R. Patil, and others objected to it and alleged that the BJP members were showing disrespect to the chair.

The arguments, counter arguments, allegations, counter allegations between the opposition and ruling party members continued for over 15 minutes resulting in utter chaos. And at one point of time the BJP members stood up to display placards that termed the state government as corrupt. Although the house seemed to be heading towards normality when Mr. Shankaramurthy stood up to bring the house under control, the very next minute the arguments resumed forcing the Council Chairman to adjourn the session for ten minutes.

The same issue had rocked the council on Thursday evening leading to adjournment as the BJP members insisted on giving time for discussion on allegations against ministers Dinesh Gundurao, H.S. Mahadev Prasad and Qamar ul Islam.
