Contract workers of the government-run hostels in the district staged a dharna in front of the office of the Chief Executive Officer of the zilla panchayat in Kalaburagi in protest against the non-payment of salary for the past five months.

The contract workers, mostly women employed in the Backward Class and Minorities Hostels, Morarji Desai Residential School and Hostel, Kittur Rani Chennamma Residential Schools in the district took out a procession under the banner of the Government Hostel and Residential School Employees Union and staged a demonstration demanding release of the pending wages of the past five months.

Union president Bheemshetty Yempalli said that the contract workers were being exploited by the agency through which they got jobs in the hostels, and were being denied minimum wages that were revised in April.
