AICC president Rahul Gandhi visited Sharada Peetha at Sringeri, a place with which his family has a long relationship, on Wednesday.

He offered prayers at the Sharadamba temple along with other leaders of the Congress, including Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and AICC general secretary K.C. Venugopal. Mr. Gandhi and other Congress leaders also met Bharati Tirtha Swami. Later, the AICC president had an interaction with children who have been provided education by the peetha.

Mr. Gandhi’s grandmother and former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had visited the peetha in 1978 before the byelection to the Lok Sabha from Chikkamagaluru and had sought the blessings of Chandrasekhara Bharati Swami. Her son Rajiv Gandhi had also visited the place. A Sanskrit study centre set up by the peetha at Sringeri has been named after Rajiv Gandhi. The peetha was founded by Adi Shankaracharya.

During his tour of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts on Tuesday, Mr. Gandhi had visited a temple, a church, and a dargah.
