Construction of underpass to be taken up in Chitradurga

March 31, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:40 am IST - CHITRADURGA:

Deputy Commissioner Srirangaiah has said that steps will be taken to construct an underpass near the JMIT Circle and areas from where more number of accidents are being reported.

Speaking at a meeting of officers after inspecting JMIT Circle here on Monday, he said that it had come to the notice of the authorities that many accidents were taking place in many circles owing to unscientific curves on roads. The National Highways Authority of India should have taken precautionary measures to avoid such curves during the construction of the roads. As they had not done their work systematically, it had become inevitable to construct underpasses to avoid accidents, Mr. Srirangaiah said.

The Deputy Commissioner said that 424 persons lost their lives in accidents and 3,048 received injuries in the last four years in the district owing to the unscientific construction of roads.

Mr. Srirangaiah said that a proposal would be submitted for construction of seven underpasses in the city limits and efforts would be made for early approval of these works.

B.N. Chandrappa, MP, said that Union Minister for Road Transport and National Highways Nitin Gadkari would be convinced about the need for construction of underpasses and overbridges to avoid accidents during his visit to Bengaluru in the first week of April.

The work will begin near JMT Circle in six months,
