Activists of Anna Hazare Horata Samiti staged a protest on Saturday demanding that the government take measures to conserve lakes and tanks in Shivamogga city.

Addressing the protest meet, samiti president Ashok Yadav said the government should undertake a survey on the tanks and lakes in the city limits, identify and fix their boundaries, and take up fencing work to prevent encroachment.

The High Court of Karnataka had recently directed the State government to take measures to prevent encroachment of public tanks and lakes and for the development of water bodies that play an important role in maintaining ecological balance. As per the directions of the court, unauthorised structures on lakes should be removed and measures taken to prevent the discharge of sewage water to them, Mr. Yadav said.

The protesters submitted a memorandum to Assistant Deputy Commissioner N.M. Nagaraj.
