A Congress leader, who identifies himself as a member of KDP Review Committee of Hassan Zilla Panchayat, has been accused of harassing a senior citizen in Hassan.

M.S. Range Gowda, 78, a resident of K.R. Puram in Hassan, has filed a complaint with Hassan Extension Police against G. Devaraje Gowda, who claims to be a KDP Review Committee member.

Mr. Range Gowda, in his complaint, said he and his brother were jointly constructing a house on a site they had purchased a while ago in K.R. Puram. They had drilled a borewell after obtaining permission to do so. However, Devaraje Gowda demanded a bribe from the complainant threatening he would get the building demolished if he was not paid.

Mr. Range Gowda added that Devaraje Gowda had nameplates and letterheads identifying himself as a KDP Review Committee member, though it was not true. He had been blackmailing officials using a false identity.

The police has registered the complaint under Sections 419, 420, 465 and 506 of the Indian Penal Code on charges of cheating, forgery and criminal intimidation.
