‘Lingayat religion tag issue very sensitive, KPCC meeting may discuss it’

As the demand for separate religion status to the Lingayat community grows louder, the State Congress has not yet taken an official stand on the issue and the matter is likely to be discussed at an executive committee meeting of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC).

KPCC president G. Parameshwara, who returned to the State after a foreign trip, said today that there was no clarity among the seers of the Lingayat mutts on the demand. “The issue is very sensitive. There are both supporters and opponents. We will discuss the issue, if required, at the KPCC executive committee meeting.”

The Congress convention scheduled to be held in Raichur on August 4 has been postponed to August 12 owing to the death of former Chief Minister N. Dharam Singh. AICC vice-president Rahul Gandhi will attend the convention, Mr. Parameshwara said.
