Concern over rising cases of polygamy and dowry harassment

Of the 92 cases of atrocities against women reported in the last eight months in Mandya district, the culprits in a majority of cases are either husbands or in-laws of victims.

Manjula Manasa, chairperson of the Karnataka State Women’s Commission’s (KSWC), visited “Vikasana”, a rehabilitation centre, here on Wednesday and went through the data/documents related to atrocities on women. She also discussed the issues with the police officials, advocates and counsellors present there. . Ms. Manasa was told that a 92 cases of atrocities against women had been registered in Mandya since April this year. A majority of these cases related to dowry harassment, polygamy and physical assault/domestic violence by in-laws and spouses of victims.

Culprits in most of the cases were relatives of the victims. A majority of cases had been solved through counselling and mediation, Maheshchandra Guru, head of Vikasana, said.

Ms. Manasa instructed the Vikasana authorities to conduct awareness programmes against female infanticide and foeticide. The helpline should help the women in distress, she said.

Child Development Project Officer (Dudda) Revanesh, child helpline coordinator at Vikasana H.R. Shubha and others were present.

Law day

Earlier, Ms. Manasa participated in a programme to mark the National Law Day celebrations organised by the Mandya Bar Association here.
