Concern over Bidar’s groundwater

March 19, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:43 am IST - Bidar:

Experts have said that groundwater might soon dry up in Bidar if measures for watershed development were not taken up immediately.

They were speaking at ‘The Glory That Was Bidar’.

Surangam digger C. Kunjambu from Kasaragod said that it was easier to dig surangam wells in areas like Bidar as it had laterite soil.

He pointed out that Karez was similar to the Surangam structure, only that Karez was meant as a rain water harvesting and filtering system while surangams were mostly meant for transport of underground water.

V. Govindan Kutty, ground water expert from Calicut University, said that indiscriminate conversion of green belt areas into real estate scheme without calculating environment costs could be disastrous.
