Minister in-charge of Dharwad district Vinay Kulkarni handed over a cheque for ₹ 8 lakh as compensation to the kin of wrestler Santosh Hosamani, who suffered injuries in the recent State Olympics athletics meet and died in hospital.

While the State government has provided ₹ 6 lakh compensation, the Karnataka State Olympics Association has given ₹ 2 lakh. Mr. Kulkarni also consoled Hosamani’s parents and family members and assured them of all possible help from the government.

Deputy Commissioner S.B. Bommanahalli said that the Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation has announced ₹ 2 lakh compensation to the wrestler’s family.

A cheque will be handed over to them shortly, he added.

Besides, the gymnasium in the village would be developed and named after Hosamani, he said.

Special gesture

As a special gesture, Labour Minister Santosh Lad gave ₹ 5 lakh from his private funds to the family. Mr. Lad said that he would also see if Hosamani’s two brothers working as drivers in private firms can be given government jobs.
