The Committee on Public Undertakings has expressed happiness over the performance of Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Corporation (CESC), Mysore, which was better than that of other government undertakings reviewed by it so far. It felt that CESC had good scope for improving its performance by taking up new initiatives to attain self-sufficiency in the energy sector.
Members of the committee, headed by D.N. Jeevaraj, examined the audit reports of CESC during a review meeting here recently.
Giving details of the meeting to the media, Mr. Jeevaraj, who represents Sringeri in the Legislative Assembly, said CESC earned a profit of Rs. 11 crore in 2010-11 and the figure would touch at least Rs. 10 crore in 2011-12. The figures were significant as the corporation had made losses since its inception in 2006, he explained. Mr. Jeevaraj, who assumed charge as the committee's chairman two months ago, said that CESC had been advised to encourage alternative sources of energy to attain “self sufficiency” in the power sector. Mini-hydel power projects, solar energy and wind energy must be encouraged, he suggested. The committee comprises 15 MLAs and five MLCs from the ruling and the Opposition parties. Mr. Jeevaraj welcomed the CESC's move to regularise unauthorised irrigation pump-sets, and said that other electricity supply companies (Escoms) must also do that. He also expressed happiness over the implementation of the Restructured-Accelerated Power Development and Reforms Programme (R-APDRP) scheme in Mandya by CESC.
'Doing well'
To a question, Mr. Jeevaraj said the State had 70 working government undertakings and 15 non-working undertakings.
