Shashil G. Namoshi, president of the Hyderabad Karnataka Education Society (HKES) said on Tuesday that office-bearers of the Consortium of Medical, Engineering, and Dental Colleges of Karnataka (COMEDK) would meet in Bangalore on December 20 to consider various options after the implementation of the Karnataka Professional Educational Institutions (Regulation of Admission and Fixation of Fee) Act, 2006, from the next academic year.
Mr. Namoshi told presspersons here on Tuesday that although private colleges would stand to benefit from the decision to implement the 2006 Act, at least in terms of admissions to medical and dental courses, they would not be in a position to fill all the engineering seats.
The HKES runs a medical, a dental and two engineering colleges in Gulbarga and Raichur districts.
Even in the existing system of admission, many engineering seats remained vacant, he said. In the PDA College of Engineering of the HKES, 80 seats remained unfilled last year, he added.
Mr. Namoshi said the COMEDK would discuss all these aspects and decide on the quantum of engineering seats to be surrendered to the government-quota, which will be filled through the Common Entrance Test by the Karnataka Examinations Authority.
Yet to be resolved
The issue of admission to engineering, medical and dental colleges in the Hyderabad Karnataka region following the amendment of Article 371 of the Constitution, which provides for 70 per cent reservation to students from the region in colleges in the region and 8 per cent reservation in colleges outside the region, was yet to be resolved.
