The High Court of Karnataka on Friday disposed of a petition filed by the Admission Overseeing Committee (AOC) for professional educational institutions, as the Consortium of Medical, Engineering and Dental Colleges in Karnataka (COMEDK) agreed to conduct an extended round of counselling by the end of July to fill vacant seats in private unaided engineering colleges based on merit.

The AOC on Thursday moved the Court seeking a direction to the Karnataka Unaided Private Engineering Colleges’ Association (KUPECA) and the COMEDK to conduct an extended round of counselling to fill a large number of seats based on merit before transferring these seats to the management quota.

When the petition came up for hearing before a Division Bench comprising Justice H.G. Ramesh and Justice S. Mudagal, a counsel for the AOC submitted a memo along with the letter written by COMEDK’s secretary indicating that an extended round of counselling would be as per the AOC’s July 25 direction. As the counsel said that the petition does not survive for consideration in view of COMEDK’s letter, the Bench disposed of the petition.

The AOC approached the court as both the KUPECA and the COMEDK had not acted upon the July 25 direction issued for conducting extended round of counselling. The COMEDK, after the filling of the petition, had written to the AOC, indicating that it would conduct counselling to fill vacant seats based on merit by July 30 or 31.
