At the end of the first round of engineering counselling held by the Consortium of Medical, Engineering and Dental Colleges of Karnataka (COMED-K) on Wednesday, 7,988 seats of the 17,150 were taken by students.
A total of 1,105 students have surrendered their engineering seats.
With COMED-K counselling beginning a day before the Common Entrance Test (CET) counselling this year, many Karnataka students took up a provisional seat through COMED-K while entering as many options as possible through the CET conducted by Karnataka Examinations Authority.
The total number of engineering seats taken by students this year is up by 449 seats as compared to 7,539 last year. Despite the rush to take up provisional seats, the seat surrender through COMED-K this year is up by 0.6 per cent, said A.S. Srikanth, chief executive, COMED-K.
Of the 1,105 who surrendered their seats, 584 are from Karnataka.
The second round of engineering counselling will begin on July 19. Students cannot surrender their seats either during the second round of counselling or after the second round, he said.
