Coconut farmer ends life

Dejected over crop loss and rising debts, a farmer from Sollepura village near Kikkeri hobli in K.R. Pet taluk committed suicide.

N. Papegowda (75), the farmer, allegedly consumed pesticide at his farmland on Wednesday night. He was shifted to the district hospital in Hassan, where he died.

Mr. Papegowda had been cultivating coconut, vegetables and banana at an area of two acres. About a month back he had borrowed a loan of Rs. 80,000 from a cooperative bank and around Rs. 1 lakh from private financiers to drill a borewell, his relatives reportedly told the police.

According to them, Mr. Papegowda was depressed over crop loss and debts.

The police said that they would investigate the reason for his suicide. K.R. Pet tahsildar Shivakumar, taluk panchayat president Bhuvaneshwari Mohan, vice-president Nagarathnamma, executive officer G. Ramachandra and others visited Sollepura and consoled the family members.
