Coast Guard personnel are searching for a missing fisherman who was on board a gillnet boat which sank near Netrani island off Bhatkal on Wednesday.
Of eight fishermen on board ‘Guru Anugraha’, seven had been rescued by fishermen in other local boats nearby. Search is on for Manjunath Karvi (35), a Coast Guard release here said.
The fishing boat which left Mavinkura Bunder at 8.30 a.m. sank 15 km southwest of Bhatkal. Now, Coast Guard ship from Mangaluru Kasturba Gandhi is searching for the missing fisherman.
“Another Coast Guard ship from Goa has also been alerted to keep a sharp lookout for the fisherman,” the release said.
Coast Guard has advised fishermen to check weather forecasts before proceeding to sea as sea conditions are presently rough and high speed winds accompanied by squalls and heavy rainfall are frequent.
The fishing boats should operate in pairs or groups and fishermen should carry Distress Alerting Transmitters, radio communication equipment, life saving appliances, documents of boats and biometric identity cards, additional mobile phones/batteries, temporary repair kits, first aid kit, extra fuel and ration, flashlights with additional batteries and necessary medicines, it said.
