The Yadgir City Municipality has decided to take up the drilling of fresh borewells where it was required and flush the dried up borewells as well as take up repair of damaged water pipeline in the city at a cost of Rs. 65 lakh.

Members cutting across party lines criticised the Commissioner of the Municipality Khaja Moinuddin for his failure to tackle the drinking water crisis in many wards in the city in the special meeting convened to discuss the issue here on Monday.

The chairman of the municipality, who chaired the meeting, said that out of the Rs. 65 lakh, Rs. 30 lakh has been released by the district administration under the Drought Relief Fund and moved the proposal to use Rs. 35 lakh from the funds available with the municipality to tackle the drinking water shortage in the city.

The members unanimously gave their approval for utilising the required funds from the municipality funds.

Congress member of the Municipality Basavaraj Jain said many areas in the city were facing severe drinking water shortage nothing had been done to solve the problem. Mr. Moinuddin admitted the lapses in tackling the drinking water shortage and attributed this to the shortage of technical staff and assured the agitated members that the problem would be tackled within 45 days by availing the services of technical staff from Surpur TMC till the drinking water situation improved in the city.

Connections

He said unauthorised water connections were also another reason for the drinking water shortage in the city and said out of the total 13,675 houses in the city only 4,365 houses had authorised water connections and rest drew water illegally.
