CMC in trouble over ‘misleading’ Lok Adalat on landfill unit

The district administration and city municipal council are facing allegations of filing false affidavit before the Karnataka Lok Adalat on setting up of a landfill unit to dispose municipal solid waste generated in the city.

The district administration, in order to save its face, has issued a notice to the CMC seeking clarification on its progress report on the landfill site, upon which the affidavit was filed.

Deputy Commissioner V. Anbukkumar, in his submissions before the Lok Adalat in December 2013 and April this year, claimed that the landfill unit at Agile village was “operational”. The officer said that construction of a compound, shed, internal approach roads, segregation platform and pits were complete besides ensuring electricity connection and tree plantation on 14 acres of land. H.M. Suresh Kumar, CMC member, alleged on Monday that the district administration had misled the Lok Adalat by filing false affidavit. “Not even a load of municipal waste has been dumped there,” he alleged. Following his allegations, the Deputy Commissioner issued a notice on Tuesday to the CMC seeking its response. It said the Deputy Commissioner had filed the affidavit based on the CMC’s progress report. “Now it is being alleged that the landfill unit is not yet operational. If so, the CMC will be held responsible for misleading the district administration,” the notice said.

K.R. Pallavi, Project Director of DUDC, told The Hindu that the notice was issued to MC because the district administration filed the affidavit based on CMC’s report. CMC Commissioner V.H. Krishnamurthy blamed his predecessor. “The district administration filed the affidavit based on the progress report sent by my predecessor, Nagabhushan, in July 2013. He placed wrong facts. I will just place the facts as response to the notice,” Mr. Krishnamurthy said.
