Chief Minister Siddaramaiah will visit Chamarajanagar town on October 7 along with a host of Ministers and officials to review the progress of welfare schemes and launch various development projects.
Officials in the district told The Hindu that Mr. Siddaramaiah would lay the foundation stone for projects to be taken up at a cost of Rs. 33 crore.
As part of preparations for the Chief Minister’s visit, Deputy Commissioner A.M. Kunjappa has held several rounds of meetings with senior officials of various departments, district in-charge Minister H.S. Mahadeva Prasad, and R. Dhruvanarayan, MP.
The Chief Minister will launch the work on nine hostels for students belonging to the Schedule Castes, Schedule Tribes and backward classes.
A total of 1,350 unmarried/divorced women aged between 40 and 64 have been identified in the Chamarajanagar taluk under the Manasvini scheme and they are eligible for monthly pension of Rs. 500. The Chief Minister is expected to present the amount to some of the beneficiaries during his visit, officials said. The Chief Minister, accompanied by a battery of senior officials, would review implementation of welfare schemes and development works in the presence of the public, elected representatives of urban and rural local bodies, MLAs and the MP from the district.
The district, carved out of Mysore when late J.H. Patel was the Chief Minister, was classified as the most backward by the D.M. Nanjundappa Committee report on redressal of regional imbalances. A cross-section of people told The Hindu that the Chief Minister’s visit would help accelerate the pace of execution of development works in the town as well in the five taluks — Chamarajanagar, Gundlupet, Yelandur, Kollegal and Hanur.
Schemes to supply drinking water to 135 villages in Kollegal taluk, 38 villages in Yelandur taluk and 131 villages in Gundlupet taluk would be implemented, Mr. Kunjappa said. Moreover, some village roads would be upgraded to district major roads and plans would be formulated to implement underground drainage (UGD) works in Gundlupet and other towns. UGD works had commenced in Chamarajanagar, Mr. Kunjappa said.
The State government has released Rs. 17 crore under the Nagarothana Yojane for infrastructure development in the jurisdiction of urban local bodies in the district.
