The Environment Officer of the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board’s regional office in Hassan has recommended closure of Omnikan Earth Sciences Private Ltd., a lutein manufacturing unit, located in the industrial area of Hassan for “not maintaining standards in treating effluents.”
The board is expected to issue closure orders under Section 33A of the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974. The KSPCB had served a show-cause notice to the industry last week for releasing untreated effluents into open ponds on the industry premises.
The industry had also released untreated effluents into the Samudravalli tank. A large number of fish were found dead in the tank on Wednesday.
Environment officer P. Basavaraj visited the industry on Thursday and recommended for its closure.
