‘Clean Kalaburagi Mission’ to be launched today

Door-to-door collection of waste and its segregation are the main features

February 01, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:46 am IST - KALABURAGI:

The State government has decided to take up a ‘Clean Kalaburagi Mission’ to manage the waste generated here.

Municipal Administration and Minorities Welfare Minister Qamarul Islam will launch the programme on Sunday.

Lack of landfill site

Besides going for door-to-door collection of solid waste generated in houses, segregation of recyclable garbage, plastic, and others will be ensured before it is transported to the landfill site on the outskirts of Udnur village, 20 km from the city.

Previous attempts by the Kalaburagi City Corporation for door-to-door collection of garbage failed mainly due to the lack of a landfill site and a scientific plan for waste management.

City Corporation Commissioner Shrikant Kattimani told The Hindu on Saturday that the corporation had made large-scale preparations to provide a cleaner look to the city.

Machinery and vehicles to transport waste had been purchased in the past six months. While the Department of Municipal Administration provided Rs. 5 crore to purchase compressors, lorries and tractor trailers to transport waste, the Hyderabad Karnataka Region Development Board sanctioned Rs. 3 crore to buy additional machinery.

Systematic process

Mr. Kattimani said that systematic door-to-door collection of waste would play an important part in the success of the scheme. To achieve this task, the 64 sq. km area of the corporation would be divided into 15 zones, which would enable the city corporation to keep a close tab on door-to-door collection of waste and its segregation before it is moved to the land fill site.

No fee from residents

One of the features of the scheme is that fees would not be collected for door-to-door collection of dry and wet waste.

As the city corporation did not have enough personnel to take up door-to-door collection of garbage, it was decided to outsource the job in 43 of the 55 wards at a cost of Rs 10.97 crore a year, and the remaining wards would be handled by the existing staff of the corporation.

Responsibility

It will be the responsibility of the outsourcing agency to ensure that dry and wet waste is collected from every house every day; it is transported to the segregation centres established in each of the 15 zones; and the segregated dry and wet waste is transported to the landfill site.

Roads and side drains and storm drains should be cleaned every day and the garbage collected will be shifted to the landfill site. Parks and gardens and open spaces and markets too should be cleaned every day.

The waste will be dumped at a landfill site on the outskirts of Udnur village
