A 16-year-old girl studying at Morarji Desai Residential School on the outskirts of Jewargi town in Kalaburagi district, ended her life by hanging from a double-stack metal bed in her hostel room in the early hours of Saturday.

She has been identified as Priyanka Mandrawad, resident of Shanti Nagar in Jewargi town and a Class 10 student. A suicide note purportedly written by the girl stating “I am going to kill myself by jumping into the well and don’t try to search me”, was recovered from the scene.

Her room-mates said that Priyanka was in a normal mood last night before going to bed. The hostel warden stated that she had last spoken to Priyanka at midnight.

Her parents and friends claimed that Priyanka’s handwriting does not match that of the death note. Her friends have ruled out any academic problems as according to them, her performance has been good.

The police have registered a case of unnatural death and are waiting for the post-mortem report.

Family members of the deceased along with residents of Shanti Nagar staged a protest outside the taluk hospital, alleging foul play in her death and demanded an investigation into the case.
