A heated argument between two groups, from different localities, following a motorcycle accident resulted in a clash here on Friday night.

Over a dozen people, including a police constable, were injured in the incident.

An unfortunate fallout of the incident was that a woman, identified as Beesamma (26) and residing in Timmapurpet locality died when she rushed out of her house on hearing a commotion outside.

According to the police, Beesamma, who was with her husband and children in her house about 500 metres from the spot of lathi-charge, died when she fell down while rushing out of her house to know what was happening outside.

Superintendent of Police Chetan Singh Rathod rushed to the spot with additional forces and brought the situation under control. No arrests have were made.

On Saturday morning, Assistant Commissioner M.P. Maruthi imposed prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code in Timmapurpet and Harijanwada areas. A large police force has been deployed.

Accident

It all began when two motorcycles, ridden by persons from Timmapurpet and Harijanwada localities, collided near LVD College on Friday afternoon.

The incident led to an argument and clash between the two groups in which Ravikumar, Venkanna and Timmayya, residents of Harijanwada, were injured.

Enraged by the attack, youths from Harijanwada allegedly ransacked a restaurant in Station Road and burnt an office at LVD College Road, both belonging to Murali Yadav, Congress leader and resident of Timmapurpet, late in the evening.

As the situation looked like going out of control, the police resorted to lathi-charge and burst tear-gas shells to disperse the mob.

On Saturday morning, S. Murugan, Inspector-General of Police, Northeastern Range, visited the city and took stock of the situation.

“The situation is under complete control. We have identified the persons involved in the rioting and will nab them,” Mr. Rathod told The Hindu .

S. Sasikanth Senthil, Deputy Commissioner, said that the prohibitory orders would remain in force till Sunday.

“We will take a final call on the orders after assessing the ground situation,” he added.
