A clear picture on the mode of admission to medical courses would emerge on Monday when the Supreme Court is expected to pass an order on the plea made by Karnataka, said Minister of State for Medical Education Sharanprakash Patil.
Petition submitted
The State government has submitted a petition in the Supreme Court on allowing the State to fill up medical seats in government medical colleges and its share in private medical colleges as per the consensual agreement with the private management using the Common Entrance Test (CET) process this year.
Dr. Patil told The Hindu on Saturday that the Medical Council of India (MCI) had stated that the States may be permitted to fill up seats in government medical colleges, but was silent on the government quota in private medical colleges, while the Centre had stated that it would consult the State governments before taking a stand. This was in response to a poser from the Supreme Court to MCI and the Centre on whether the States can be allowed to fill up seats in their States this year by conducting entrance examinations.
However, he said that the Centre had not contacted the State on the issue.
