Civic body plans to free Davangere of plastic bags by August 15

All possible efforts are being made to ensure that Davangere becomes free from using plastic bags by August 15 this year, Mayor Ashwini Prashant has said.

Speaking to reporters here recently, she stated that the corporation had already taken up awareness campaign in the city to convince the people on the impact of using plastic bags in future.

The officers concerned have already reached more than 95 per cent of the population. The officers concerned are conducting regular inspection of shops and business outlets to ensure that plastic bags are not used by them.

The officers of the corporation have also taken up steps to end pig menace in the city and have already started shifting them out of the city limits. In all the corporation has decided to ensure that Davangere city becomes cleaner and greener in the next few months, she added.

Answering to a question on supply of drinking water to city, the Mayor replied that the drinking water is supplied to city once in four days and the existing storage of water would be enough for the next 15 days. “There are plans to link Avaragere tank, Kundwad tank and TV station tank to ensure that the city gets sufficient water,” she added.

As per the studies, the city requires a total of 160 MLD of water by 2045, so the officers concerned are preparing plans meet the requirements of drinking water in future, she added.

Corporation Health Standing Committee President Halesh informed that the businessmen and owners of factories in the city have been convinced on impact of using plastic and so far a total of 2.5 tonnes of plastic has been recovered from them. A total of 70 vehicles of the corporation in pressed into service to check use of plastic in the commercial and residential areas. Deputy Mayor Rajshekhar Gouda and Corporation Commissioner B.H. Narayanappa were present.
