The Mysore City Corporation, which has been finding it difficult to check the growing menace of illegal dumping of construction debris, has now proposed to manufacture bricks from the debris.
Haseen Taj, Chairperson, Standing Committee on Taxation, Finance and Appeals, said the illegally dumped construction debris was affecting the cleanliness of the city. Hence, she said the MCC proposed to use the construction debris to establish a brick manufacturing unit in partnership with private parties. The announcement comes even as residents of Udayagiri had complained to the MCC about dumping of debris alongside a park and a civic amenities site in second cross, Syed Abdul Rahman Road, Udaygiri, on Sunday. Though MCC Commissioner C.G. Betsurmath pointed out that the area fell under the jurisdiction of the Mysore Urban Development Authority, he added that the civic body would come up with a system of collecting construction debris that can be used for a productive purpose like manufacturing bricks.
Meanwhile, dumping of construction debris in inappropriate places has already been declared as an offence by the MCC and this attracts a penalty of Rs. 1,000 for the first time and Rs. 5,000 for repeat offence. Though more than five weeks had passed since the MCC declared that it will impose penalty for the offence, penal fine has not been recovered even in a single case so far.
Dr. Betsurmath said instances of illegal dumping will, in future, be referred to the jurisdictional police for booking a case.
