Deputy Commissioner of Gadag Manoj Jain has said that since citizens lead a peaceful life because of the sacrifices of police personnel, they (citizens) have a responsibility to give moral support to the latter.
Addressing a gathering to mark Police Martyrs’ Day on the premises of the office of Superintendent of Police of Gadag on Saturday, after paying tributes to the police martyrs, he said “The police personnel are on duty round-the-clock and because of their duty consciousness, we are leading a peaceful and safe life. While we celebrate festivals with fervour, the police personnel stay away from their houses and help us celebrate the festivals peacefully. Because of their service, their family members too have to sacrifice a lot. The district administration is committed to extend all assistance and cooperation to the welfare of the families of police personnel.”
Superintendent of Police of Gadag K. Santosh Babu said that the Police Martyr’s Day was being observed to remember and pay tributes to the soldiers who lost their lives while protecting the country against the attack of Chinese forces on India on October 21, 1959.
Reading out the list of police martyrs, Mr Babu said that in the year 2016-17 as many as 370 police personnel had lost their lives while serving the nation. S.P. Ravikumar, M.B. Patil, T.D. Jayaram, Arunkumar and Ramesh of Karnataka were among them.
Earlier armed policemen fired three rounds in the air to pay tributes to the martyred police personnel. Dignitaries paid tributes by placing wreaths at the police memorial.

Regional Commissioner Shivayogi Kalsad paid tributes to policemen who died on duty across the country, at the Police Martyrs Day in Belagavi on Saturday. He urged youngsters to recall the sacrifice by these men and women in uniform. “Soldiers guard our borders while the police personnel maintain law and order. A police personnel’s sacrifice is no less than the sacrifice made by other patriots,” he said.
SP Ravikante Gowda read out the names of 383 police personnel who died on duty in various States this year.
IGP K. Ramachandra Rao, DC S. Ziyaullah, Police Commissioner T.G. Krishna Bhat and others were present.
