Director of the Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL), Awadesh Kumar Mishra, has been booked for allegedly sexually harassing an assistant professor from Visva Bharati, a Central University in West Bengal.
The professor, before lodging a police complaint in Mysuru, had moved the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in New Delhi. The NHRC forwarded a copy of the complaint to the Mysuru city police.
The complainant was on Tuesday taken to a city court by the Jayalakshmipuram police to record her statement before a magistrate.
The police said Prof. Mishra allegedly came in contact with the complainant when she visited CIIL in 2013 for a workshop. The complainant has accused Prof. Mishra of pursuing her even after the conclusion of the workshop. She has accused him of making explicitly sexual overtures over phone, the police said. She alleged that the director was seeking sexual favours from her to issue a certificate for her participation in the workshop.
The Jayalakshmipuram police registered an FIR against Prof. Mishra on Monday, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) H.T. Shekar told The Hindu . He has been booked under Section 354A of IPC, which deals with sexual harassment, besides Section 354D of IPC that deals with stalking.
