The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) will submit its final report on the death of police sub-inspector Mallikarjun Bande during an encounter with a criminal in Gulbarga in January, in the next 10 days.
Home Minister K.J. George told presspersons here on Tuesday that investigation into Bande’s death was progressing well and the CID had submitted a preliminary report.
When asked who was responsible for Bande’s death, Mr. George said he would not comment until the final report was received.
The Minister said the government had ordered a CID investigation into the death of Kabir in firing allegedly by Anti-Naxal Force (ANF) personnel at Tanikodu check-post on the Sringeri–Karkala Road early on April 19. The CID was expected to submit a preliminary report on the youth’s death in a couple of days. The government had also ordered a magisterial inquiry into the case, Mr. George said.
On the demand for an investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation into the death of Kabir, he said a decision would be taken based on the CID’s preliminary report. He could only recommend to the Chief Minister requesting for a CBI investigation, he added. Mr. George said the government had announced a compensation of Rs. 5 lakh to the aggrieved family of Kabir, who was a resident of Krishnapura in Mangalore.
To another question, Mr. George said the Additional Director-General of Police (Law and Order) had been asked to submit a report on the killing of a man for allegedly showing disrespect to the Koran in Mulbagal in Kolar district.
He said the government would review its decision on the relaxation in closing hours of bars (during weekends) and restaurants in Bangalore after three months from the date on which the order was issued. The deadline for closing bars and restaurants was extended from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m. last month.
“We will review the decision after three months and take a decision,” he said.
Vacancies About 8,500 vacancies, including that of 316 police sub-inspectors, in the Home Department would be filled in a few months. There were 22,000 vacancies in the department against the sanctioned posts, Mr. George said.
Ramesh Kumar’s plaint against Hiremath referred to ED
The State government has referred to the Enforcement Directorate (ED) a complaint made by Congress leader K.R. Ramesh Kumar with regard to Samaj Parivartan Samudaya (SPS) and its president S.R. Hiremath allegedly receiving funds from foreign sources, Home Minister K.J. George said here on Tuesday.
Mr. Hiremath, however, has termed Mr. Kumar’s charges “baseless”.
