A probe by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has been ordered into the recent attack on a journalist by BJP workers, allegedly for exposing illegal mining in Tumakuru district.

Home Minister Ramalinga Reddy handed over the investigation to the CID on Monday after a delegation of journalists representing the All-India Union of Working Journalists and Bangalore Press Club met him in the city seeking a fair probe.

On Saturday morning, Vagish, a reporter working with a private Kannada TV channel, went to attend a press conference convened by the Tumakuru district BJP president Jyothi Ganesh at a hotel. There, he was assaulted by two local BJP leaders. An FIR has been filed at the New Extension police station against Nagesh, a BJP councillor in the Tumakuru City Corporation, Ravishankar, the district BJP unit general secretary, and a few others.

The Minister said the letter asking for CID probe has already been sent to the office of the Director-General of Police.
