Forty patients were admitted to the government hospital in Mannaekhalli in Humnabad taluk on Tuesday and Wednesday. This is apart from the 54 cases reported in Mustapur wadi village, 16 in Kallur and 12 in Sindhankera, since May last week. There have been no deaths, though two patients who were considered serious, are being treated in the district hospital.
"We are rushing emergency response teams to villages that report five or more cases," M.A. Jabbar, district disease surveillance officer said.
Health department officers are camping in villages with cases of high incidence. Zilla panchayat officials are overseeing the work of cleaning drains, purifying water sources like open wells and plugging leakages in pipelines.
"We are also going around campaigning against open defecation, as it is the prime reason for the spread of infections," Gautam Arali, district Swachch Bharat Abhiyan officer, said. We are trying to persuade them to build and use toilets by telling them about the link between disease and lack of hygiene, he said.
