To prevent illegal activities in the Chitradurga district prison and stop prisoners from making attempts to escape, the prisons authorities have decided to increase the security levels in and around the prison.

The authorities concerned have decided to have electric fencing around the 11 ft high and 147.46 m long compound wall of the prison. They have already installed iron rods and angles on the 11 ft high compound wall. Work on electric fencing is in progress.

A sum of ₹ 7 lakh is being spent on electric fencing. And, work is expected to be completed in a month.

Steps have been taken to install more than 15 closed circuit television cameras (CCTVs) in and around the prison, including the main entrance, the kitchen block, the visitors block, the library passage. The Jail Superintendent can keep constant vigil on the movement of prisoners and their visitors.

Prisoner safety

“This will also help in ensuring safety of prisoners by preventing scuffle among them,” they added.

Such facilities have been provided in more than 20 prisons in the State, including those in Bidar, Tumakuru, Bagalkot, Haveri and Davangere, the sources added.

Staff quarters
