Children of construction workers to get scholarship from Karnataka govt.

The Labour Department has decided to give scholarship for children of construction workers studying in high school and those pursuing PU and degree courses.

Minister of State for Labour P.T. Parameshwara Naik told presspersons here on Wednesday that scholarship of Rs. 10,000, Rs. 15,000, and Rs. 25,000 would be given to high school, PU and degree students each year.

He said the scholarship amount would be deposited in the students’ bank accounts. Parents of students should be registered as construction workers under the Karnataka Building and Other Construction Workers’ Welfare Board.

The scholarship would be given from this academic year, he said.

Target

As many as 6 lakh construction workers had registered with the board, and a target had been set to increase the number to 12 lakh by March 2014.

Department officials had been instructed to visit construction sites to increase registrations, he said.

The board had collected Rs. 2,270 crore in the form of cess, he added.
