May 15, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:49 am IST - Chitrdurga:

Deputy Commissioner Srirangaiah has instructed the officials of the Veterinary Department to initiate stringent measures to avoid the spread of bird flu in the district by keeping a constant vigil on private farms.

Speaking at a meeting of district-level officials convened to discuss precautionary measures that can be taken to stop the spread of bird flu here recently, Mr. Srirangaiah said that farm owners should be given clear instructions to keep the officials informed about the conditions of the chickens in their farms.

If the farm owners fail to cooperate with the officials, the latter should initiate stringent action against the farm owners, he added.

He also directed the officials to issue clear instructions to shop owners to stop inter-district transportation of chickens for the next 15 days as a precautionary measure. “Awareness on the disease should be created in all the six taluks of the district …,” he added.

The Deputy Commissioner also instructed the officials of the Veterinary Department to maintain cleanliness in the goshalas opened across the district. He also directed the officials to ensure supply drinking water and maintain stock of medicines.

“It is the responsibility of the taluk officials to visit the goshalas daily and take stock of the situation,” he added.
