Describing Rani Chennamma of Kittur as a gallant freedom fighter, Jayamrutunjayaswami of Kudalasangama math has demanded that her birth anniversary should be observed as ‘self respect day’. He was addressing presspersons here on Wednesday to announce celebrations of the 191st birth anniversary of Rani Chennamma on November 2 in Bijapur by the Trust.

He said it was one of the demands that Akhila Bharata Lingayat Panchamasali Samaja Trust would place before the government to consider during the winter session to be held in Suvarna Soudha in Belgaum.

“It is important for the people of Karnataka to know the contributions of Rani Chennamma for her freedom struggle. Women can be inspired to develop courage and self respect by considering Chennamma as a model” he said, adding that there is no demand to declare a holiday on that particular day.

“Rename airports”

He also demanded that the government should name the Sambra airport in Belgaum as ‘ Chennamma Airport’ and the Hubli airport as ‘Sangolli Rayanna Airport’ as both of them were from north Karnataka. He also said their statues should be installed in front of Suvarna Soudha in Belgaum.
