CBI probe sought into appointment of teaching staff at KUD

July 06, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:45 am IST - DHARWAD:

K.S. Jayant, former Syndicate member of Karnatak University, Dharwad, has sought an inquiry by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the alleged irregularities in the appointment of teaching staff at the university.

Panel findings

The demand was made in the backdrop of the Privileges Committee of the State Legislative Council recommending a probe by the CBI into the irregularities in offering correspondence courses at Karnatak University and the University of Mysore.

In a release, Mr. Jayant said that Karnatak University had come under the scanner for the alleged irregularities in the appointment of teaching staff during the tenure of the former Vice-Chancellor H.B. Walikar. Of the 130 appointments made for various teaching posts, University Grants Commission (UGC) norms had been flouted in the appointments for nearly 80 posts.

Favouritism

There were serious allegations of favouritism and corruption. It was a serious issue that needed to be probed into thoroughly.

It would be better if the government sought an inquiry by the CBI, Mr. Jayant said and added that he would soon write to the Union Human Resource Development Ministry and the UGC.
