Cauvery inflow improves, but still not good enough

There has been a significant increase in the inflow into the Krishnaraja Sagar (KRS) reservoir.

With incessant showers lashing the catchment areas of the Cauvery in Kodagu for the past 72 hours, the quantum of inflow has doubled since Tuesday.

The inflow was at the rate of 1,563 cusecs at 6 a.m. on Tuesday and rose to 3,336 cusecs during the same period on Thursday.

However, on a sobering note, the water levels are far below last year. According to Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre, the live storage in KRS was 5.76 tmcft, as opposed to 16.81 tmcft on the corresponding day last year.

The release of water to Tamil Nadu has been reduced to 1,576 cusecs as areas along the downstream of the reservoir have also been receiving heavy rainfall for the last several days.
