Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy said on Thursday that he has instructed the Irrigation Department to release water to the canals of the Cauvery basin so that the farmers can take up agricultural activities on time. The reservoirs of the basin have received good quantum of water thanks to the recent heavy rainfall in the catchment areas.

Speaking to presspersons after attending the ‘Alaya Pratishtha Kumbhabhisheka’ of Sri Anjaneya Swami temple at Kurubarahalli of Ramanagaram town, Mr. Kumaraswamy said the government will take measures to fill lakes through canals.

He added that the government will tackle technical and legal issues pertaining to release of water for agriculture, if any arise.

The Chief Minister emphasised the need to safeguard the interests of paddy and sugarcane growers in the Cauvery basin region.

The government is proposing to follow the Andhra Pradesh agricultural policy model, to encourage farming of less-water demanding crops to intensify the financial stability of farmers, he said.
