Have the gods been categorised as A, B and C, and are funds being allotted to temples based on such categorisation?
The Legislative Council on Tuesday witnessed a debate on ‘god’s portfolio’ during a reply to Congress member Shrikant Ghotnekar on the protests by the public against constituting management committees for temples.
While clarifying that the government had no intention of taking over management of temples, Minister for Muzrai Rudrappa Lamani said there were 34,559 temples under the Muzrai Department and only the process of setting up management committees for the same was being initiated. However, he clarified that the government had no intention of taking over ‘C’ category temples that were maintained by priests of the same families from generations.
As the Minister mentioned about classification of the temples into A, B and C categories, senior member K.B. Shanappa asked if there was discrimination among gods. Leader of the Opposition K.S. Eshwarappa intervened saying Mr. Lamani was lucky enough as he had got “god’s portfolio” and he should serve it properly.
