The Hassan tahsildar has cancelled the backward class caste certificate issued to an upper caste student.
B. Kavya, a Brahmin, was issued a certificate saying she belonged to the Vaishnava sect, listed under category III B of the backward classes list of the State government. The Hindu reported about it on September 27.
Hassan tahsildar K. Mathai told this correspondent on Saturday that Kavya filed a wrong affidavit to claim eligibility for an engineering seat. “I issued a notice asking why the caste certificate should not be cancelled. School records say she belongs to the Brahmin community. In her reply, Kavya admitted that she had given the wrong information. Based on this, the certificate was cancelled,” he said.
The order was issued on September 27. Mr. Mathai said he was contemplating legal action against Kavya.
Asked if he would initiate action against officials of the Revenue Department who verified her claims, Mr. Mathai said the certificate was issued based on a fake transfer certificate she had produced. When the department officials went for verification, her neighbours told them that she belonged to the Vaishnava sect.
Kavya’s relatives said she was a Sri Vaishnava, a sub-sect among Brahmins.
