The iconic Carlton House will continue to house the State’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) headquarters.
The State Cabinet on Wednesday decided to constitute a panel headed by Industries Minister R.V. Deshpande to identify a new location to establish the Constitution Club for legislators. Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister T.B. Jayachandra said the panel comprises Ministers from the city.
A few days ago, the Home Department had written to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah opposing the granting of Carlton House for the newly proposed Constitution Club. Home Minister G. Parameshwara wrote that the building should be retained for the CID, even though a majority of legislators cutting across party lines argued that there was no better alternative for the club in the heart of the city.
Top leaders such as Assembly Speaker Kagodu Thimmappa, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, PWD Minister H.C. Mahadevappa and senior legislators had visited Carlton House to explore its viability to house the club. The legislators zeroed in on Carlton House after their attempts to establish the club in the heritage structure Balabrooie Guest House came a cropper following strong opposition from citizens.
Other Cabinet decisions
The Cabinet also decided to hand over 5.7 acres of barren government land at Harohalli, near Kanakapura in Ramangaram district, to the Mahatma Gandhi Vidya Peeta Trust, which runs the Dayananda Sagar Institutions in the city, for the construction of a university, a medical college and a hospital. The land will be given to the trust as per the guidance value.
A plan of the Urban Development department to set up environment-friendly integrated solid waste management units in the city, for generating electricity and compost, too was green-lighted. The Cabinet also approved a Rs. 883.54-crore plan to construct a lift irrigation unit for filling 54 tanks of the Nagawara-Hebbal valley with treated sewage.
Filling tanks
More than 50 minor tanks located in Chickballapur and Bengaluru Rural districts will be filled with treated sewage, Mr. Jayachandra said.
