In an effort to reach out to graduates students in colleges ahead of the 2018 Legislative Assembly elections, the Congress government has decided to set up career guidance cells in all government and aided degree colleges in all 30 districts of the State.
The government issued an order to this effect and directed all principals of colleges to provide one room to establish career guidance cells. Principals have been instructed to designate one or two lecturers as the nodal officers to to the cell.
There are 786 government and aided first grade colleges in the State.
Muralidhar Halappa, Chairman, Karnataka Skill Development Corporation (KSDC), told The Hindu that the Department of Skill Development Entrepreneurship and Livelihood and Kaushalya Karnataka Mission would provide training for final year degree students of arts, commerce, science and branches.
Career guidance cells equipped with computers and other facilities would also provide space for companies to come and offer placements to fresh graduates, he said.
Besides registering for jobs, cells will prepare resumes and offer communication skill and computer training for candidates appearing for interviews. It would also provide information to graduates on employment opportunities in the public and private sector and encourage them to prepare for all India service examinations, he said.
The KSDC has been upgrading all district employment exchanges as multi-skill centres at a cost of ₹ 40 lakh to ₹ 60lakh on each centre. About six multi-skill centres would be established in Bengaluru City alone, Mr. Halappa said.
The department, which functions under Labour Minister Santosh Lad, has been allocated ₹360 crore in 2017-18.
